  • You definitely have some used handbags. You may have some on hand that no longer suit your current style. There are many thrift stores and second hand shops which can pick up these used handbags.  Keep in mind that the style that you would like to create and get something that will work as a good catalyst for your required look. You can take ideas from many department stores, fashion magazines and catalogues.
  • Select the embellishments needed. Beads look very nice on clutches and small evening bags. You can use buttons for patchwork styles and denim bags. You can get the 60’s and 70’s look with the help of tassels. You can buy these items from craft shop or department stores. Always take your handbags with you when going to buy embellishments so that you can match the colour and style.
  • Draw a quick blueprint using your selected decorations and your handbag. do not cut or start crafting until you are sure about the design. You can easily make changes on paper before you alter the bag or trimmings into something you might dislike.
  • Start the alterations. At first, all the attachments that can be done with glue should be done. Always use high quality fabric glue and follow the directions including the suggested drying time. If you are working with leather and suede then use special leather glue.
  • Next, you can sew any items. These items other than beads, button, patches and tassels should be attached in areas that won’t disrupt the function of zippers or other closures on the bag. For durability, you can use quilting thread. You can also use a strong nylon thread. Attach new handles. Handles are subject to great stress, so if have decided to use a length of chain for a handle, be sure to thoroughly reinforce the stitches.
  • At last, you should attach the beads to the handbag. Take the measurement of any strands that you will be using and tie each strand off separately from the others. Tie a knot every few stitches when sewing beads directly onto the fabric of the bag. In this way, you can make a nice retro handbag.
